“I design nightclubs like a gardener tends his plants. I spend time in the clubs that I've designed, learning from the energy, from people and their behaviour throughout the night. It's like a conversation: I listen and the club tells me what needs adjusting.”
For his danced lecture, the artist and stage designer Jozef Wouters delves into his archives of spaces made for nightlife. Over the years, Wouters has created several clubs both within the artistic platform Decoratelier, next to La Raffinerie, and in other places. “Creating spaces for the night challenges my understanding of space again and again. I’m interested in the game between open and closed, looking and being looked at, and how architecture can be part of it. The invitation from Charleroi danse gives me an opportunity to explore this area of my work in greater depth.”
