The Hamadcha is a Sufi brotherhood that was established by Sidi Ali Ben Hamdouche in Morocco in the late 17th century. It has always practised trance rituals as a community. For Izeddiou, Covid was a personal fracture as much as a universal one. A moment that reduced the world and individual existences alike. By working on the trance, he sought transcendence through the group. On stage are nine dancers who are also inspired by dervish and voodoo movements. The lighting by Ivan Mathis sculpts the bodies, creating a dynamic tableau performed by dancers with different body shapes, leaping, spinning and bringing aesthetic energy to the stage. Hmadcha is also political, proving that the dance can rebuild a sense of the collective again and that contemporary dance survived the tragedy of the pandemic. Including in Morocco.
