Quatuor

In contrast to entropy, the tendancy for chaos inherent in any physical system, living things are an anomaly because of their propensity to come together and their desire for movement – even if, like ivy, it defies gravity. In this fertile breeding ground, the choreographer and his long-term collaborators form a quartet of variable geometry (for a cast of six dancers) a formation that is never fixed, recreating itself ad infinitum through the improvisation inherent in its changing line-up. It reaffirms the collective quintessence of dance according to Thomas Hauert. After the lavish How to proceed (2018) and the austere If Only (2020), both of which observed bodies affected by the state of the world, Efeu (2022) brings the world face to face with states of the body. Using almost symphonic transitions, a soundtrack featuring Italian light music and contemporary pieces, and a language that is simultaneously organic and abstract, Efeu turns the social structures it is articulating into both its method and material, with as ever extremely generous “active listening” between the performers and contaminating the audience.
