In her first solo entitled Labourer, traditional dance enthusiast Madeleine Fournier explored the bourrée in three time with a touch of humour. She is continuing this research in Branle, now including a bourrée in duple time and the branle, a popular dance during the Renaissance. Reconstructing a ballroom on stage, she revives this tradition with five other performers and two musicians, recreating the alchemy between music and dance that these spaces used to produce. During this festivity, the bodies never touch, but instead size each other up and brush against one another in an erotic and amorous game, playing on the equivocal nature of the title which can also mean “set in motion” or “shake”. The ritual reveals its power to set in motion affects and energies in bodies. She develops a gentle trance-like state that gradually contaminates the protagonists, evident in the swaying bodies, as if they are shaken. A memory of bodies from the past is also revived, suddenly appearing in the present.
