Pièce pour 4 danseur·euse·s, 1 chanteur de fado + 4 musiciens

Fado, a style of Portuguese music associated with melancholy and love, also used to be danced, with feet stamping on the floor, theatrical hands and sensual bodies. BATE FADO is a performance by four dancers, four musicians and one singer. The stage design is like a gazebo open on all four sides. In this danced concert, the roles are occasionally swapped, as the musicians, dramatically brandishing their guitars, strike the floor with their feet while the dancers’ bodies become musicalised. BATE FADO is the work of the committed performers, dancers and musicians who make up the Lisbon-based duo Jonas&Lander. There was a time when fado’s highly provocative and erotic dance and music led to it being banned by Portugal’s conservative church. Dancing and singing fado is a political act once more, fighting against the standardisation of music, art and life. With its beauty and power, BATE FADO is willingly part of this movement.
