Algerian by birth, Nacera Belaza has lived in France since the age of five. Self-taught and resistant to any convention that mimics sensitive tuning in to the body, she set up her own company in 1989 in a quest to create and promote a direct link between the dancer and the audience. With the very skilful ability of stretching time and repeating gestures, Nacera Belaza’s pieces explore movement as you would explore serene, profound and continuous breathing alongside what she in her own words calls the “deafening racket of our existence”. Sur le fil is a masterful staging of the hypnotic successive appearances and disappearances of three female dancers that requires us to really look at what we are seeing. We should delight in what is shown by this dance as much as in the removal and emergence of sensitive gestural signs.
