In Epirus in northeast Greece, Rosalba Torres Guerrero and Koen Augustijnen came across traditional songs known as “mirologi”. These laments that mourners start singing
at funerals are also played by orchestras in popular festivals in the region. Frequently
led by a virtuoso clarinettist, the “mirologi” express the sorrow of separation due to bereavement, exile or marriage. Following
on from Badke, in which performers from Palestine came together around a local
Arab dance, here the two choreographers assemble nine Greek dancers for “mirologi” performed by musicians from Epirus. Sharing emotions linked to personal bereavement and exchanging gestures, looks and collective experience through song, the community they form goes through and then transcends the feeling of loss. From the depths of the complaint, Lamenta brings out a song and a dance of joy – there is light in the darkness.
