Jérôme Brabant’s show has its origins in an encounter he once had with a transgender woman. More widely, he evokes transition as a process of emancipation and distancing from compulsory and restrictive assignations. Coming from La Réunion, hybridity is a leitmotif in his pieces that are inspired by his experience of family and culture on the island. In Ecdysis, subtle changes take place, starting with the figure of walking that, initially martial, merges with other codes from cabaret, mime and the catwalk. Its title comes from the scientific term ecdysis, which means the process some animals undergo of shedding their old skin to inhabit a new one. Jérôme Brabant invites us into a metaphor for transformation, sliding from one possibility to the next, imbued with passion by the grace of the performers – his long-term collaborator Maud Pizon, Elodie Sicard and the singer Jérôme Marin – who accompany the choreographer on stage in a show of solidarity.

Edge of stage with the artists at the end of the performance on October 29.
