As soon as they come on stage, dressed with Adam-like simplicity in ankle socks and Y-fronts, they size up the audience with a swagger. This near-nakedness kicks off Débandade, the title of which implies both a documented and comical investigation of what it means to be male in the 21st century.
After decades of feminism and a redefinition of the sexes, where do men stand? This is the question posed by Olivia Grandville to seven performers of extremely diverse origins, careers and viewpoints. “Somewhere between musical theatre, vox pop, stand-up and an exorcism ritual”, without defeatism or triumphalism her unrestrained piece reveals beings in the masculine who, while full of doubt, have opted to do something radical and laugh at themselves.
